How to make breakable trees in Roblox
Trees that shatter into blocks the moment a player gets close are a satisfying first mechanic for chopping, survival and simulator games. Select your tree, describe it in one sentence, and the plugin writes a server script that finds every tagged tree and breaks it apart with physics.
The breakable trees prompt
Select the object in Studio first (or mention it with @), then send this. Change any words you like before sending.
Then keep talking to it
- 2That's too calm. Make it more dramatic.
- 3Make the parts flash white as well.
- 4When the parts are on the ground, add an outline.
What the AI builds
- A BreakableTree tag on your tree model
- A server Script in ServerScriptService that watches player distance
- Physics impulses and spin on every part, plus a Highlight flash
How it works
The script checks every few frames how far each player is from each tagged tree. When someone is inside the break radius, it marks the tree as broken so it only happens once.
Parts with Studs or Inlet surfaces are welded together by Roblox when the game starts, so the script removes those joints first. Then it unanchors each part and pushes it outward and up with ApplyImpulse.
A white Highlight fades out over a quarter of a second to sell the hit. Debris lands within a few studs so it can be looted later.
How to make breakable trees in Roblox, step by step
- 1
Pick the tree
Open your place in Roblox Studio and click the tree model in the Explorer or the viewport. Any model made of parts works: a trunk with leaves, a stack of blocks, or a tree from the Toolbox. If you have several trees, select one; the AI tags it and the same script will handle every tree you tag later.
- 2
Send the prompt
Paste the prompt into the plugin's prompt box, or press Send to Studio on this page. The AI reads the selected model first, then adds the BreakableTree tag and writes one server Script in ServerScriptService. It does not edit the tree's parts until the game runs.
- 3
Press Play and walk up to it
Start a playtest and walk toward the tree. Inside the break radius, about 8 studs by default, the tree flashes white and every part flies outward and up, spinning as it goes. The pieces land a few studs away so they can be picked up later.
- 4
Tune the feel
Stop the playtest and say what you want changed in plain words. "More dramatic" adds spin, a brighter flash and a particle burst instead of throwing parts out of reach. "Break from further away" raises the radius. Each change is a new prompt and a new undo step.
- 5
Tag more trees
Select other tree models and ask the AI to make them breakable too. Because the script looks up every tagged model when the server starts and listens for new tags, you never copy the script. Trees spawned later by a forest spawner can carry the same tag and work right away.
Roblox breakable trees settings you can change
Change any of these by asking in plain words, or open the script and edit the value yourself. Each prompt is one undo step, so you can try a value and go back.
- BreakRadius
- An attribute on each tree, 8 studs by default. Raise it on a big tree so players do not have to touch the trunk.
- Impulse strength
- Between 30 and 45 per unit of mass, which keeps debris within roughly 10 to 25 studs. The recipe never pushes parts out of reach.
- Flash
- A white Highlight that fades out over a quarter of a second. Ask for a longer or colored flash and only these two values change.
- Broken
- An attribute the script sets so a tree breaks once. Clear it, or ask for a respawn, if you want trees to come back.
- Respawn
- Optional: the original model is copied to ServerStorage before breaking and put back after a delay you choose.
Fixing breakable trees in Roblox
The tree flashes but stays in one piece
The parts are still joined. Stud and Inlet surfaces weld touching parts together when the game starts, and WeldConstraints do the same. The recipe destroys each part's joints before unanchoring it; if you added welds afterwards, tell the AI "it doesn't fall apart" and it will check the joints again.
Parts fly across the whole map
The impulse is too high for the part sizes. Say "keep the pieces closer" and the AI lowers the strength. Very light parts, such as thin leaves, fly further than heavy trunk blocks.
Nothing happens when I walk up
Check that the model has the BreakableTree tag in the Tag Editor and that the script sits in ServerScriptService. The distance is measured from the model's pivot, so a pivot far from the trunk can make the radius feel off.
The tree is also welded to the baseplate
That is the same Studs surface issue. Breaking removes those joints too, so the trunk does not stay stuck to the ground.
More breakable trees ideas to try
Once the basic version works, send one of these as your next prompt. Each builds on what is already in your place.
“Make the tree shake for half a second before it breaks.”
A short wobble warns the player and makes the break feel earned. The AI adds a tween on the model before the existing break code runs.
“Only break the tree when I hit it with the axe.”
Swaps the distance trigger for a Health attribute that the axe lowers, so walking past no longer breaks anything.
“Add a burst of leaf particles when it breaks.”
A ParticleEmitter fires once at the tree's pivot. It adds to the flash without throwing parts further away.
“Bring the tree back after 20 seconds.”
Turns on the optional respawn: a copy waits in ServerStorage and replaces the broken tree after the delay.
Where it goes in Explorer
- Workspace / your tree model, tagged BreakableTree, with a BreakRadius attribute
- ServerScriptService / BreakableTrees (Script)
- ServerStorage / a copy of the tree, only if you ask for respawning
Script names can differ a little; the AI names things to fit your game and tells you what it added.
Tips for a good prompt
Select the object first, or mention it with @, so the AI changes the right thing. Say what the player should see and feel, not how to script it: “the parts should fly a little and spin” works better than naming functions.
Ask for one change at a time and press Play in between. If something is off, describe what you saw, like “it only works once” or “the pieces go through the floor”. If a change goes the wrong way, press Ctrl+Z once and try different words.
Scripting it by hand vs. with AI
Doing this by hand means adding a CollectionService tag, writing a Heartbeat loop that checks each player's distance, removing joints, unanchoring parts, applying impulses scaled by mass, adding spin and building a Highlight tween. That is roughly sixty lines of Luau and a few rounds of testing to get the debris distance right. The plugin writes the same structure from one sentence, and every value stays readable in the script so you can keep editing it yourself.
Before you start
You need Roblox Studio on Windows or macOS and the free Roblox AI Game Maker plugin, connected to your account with an 8 character code. New accounts get 2 credits and a free model you can use every day. A typical prompt on a cheap model costs a few hundredths of a credit, and the AI play-tests and fixes errors as part of the same build. Write in any language; the AI answers in the same one.
Breakable trees FAQ
Does it work with my own tree models?
Yes. Select any model made of parts and ask for it. The AI tags it and the same script handles every tree with that tag.
Why didn't my tree fall apart?
Usually the parts are welded by stud surfaces or WeldConstraints. The plugin's recipe removes joints before breaking; if you built the tree another way, tell the AI "it doesn't fall apart" and it will check the joints.
