One prompt mechanic

How to make obby checkpoints in Roblox

Checkpoints are the backbone of every obby. Touch a pad and your stage is saved; fall and you respawn on the last pad you reached. The plugin builds the pads, a Stage stat and the respawn logic.

The obby checkpoints prompt

Select the object in Studio first (or mention it with @), then send this. Change any words you like before sending.

Then keep talking to it

  1. 2Only let players go forward, not back.
  2. 3Add a stage counter on screen.
  3. 4Save progress when they leave.

What the AI builds

  • Numbered checkpoint pads in Workspace/Checkpoints
  • leaderstats.Stage for each player
  • A server Script for touches and respawning

How it works

Each pad carries its stage number. When a character touches a pad, the server only accepts the next stage, so players cannot jump backwards to cheat the counter.

On respawn the script moves the character to the pad for the player's current stage, slightly above it so they do not fall through.

Saving between sessions uses DataStoreService and is added only when you ask, since it needs a published game.

How to make obby checkpoints in Roblox, step by step

  1. 1

    Lay out your stages

Build your obby first, or ask the AI to make the pads for you. Checkpoints live in a folder named Checkpoints in Workspace, and each pad is named by its stage number with a Stage attribute.

  2. 2

    Send the prompt

Send the prompt with your pads selected if you already have them. The AI numbers them in order, anchors them and writes one server Script that handles touches and respawning.

  3. 3

    Touch the next pad

Press Play. A Stage value appears on the leaderboard. Touching the next pad raises it by one. Touching an earlier pad does nothing, so players cannot lower or skip their stage by accident.

  4. 4

    Fall and respawn

Reset your character or fall off. When the new character spawns, it is moved to the pad for your current stage, a few studs above it so you land on top instead of inside it.

  5. 5

    Add what your obby needs

Ask for an on-screen stage counter, skipping, or saving between sessions. Saving uses DataStoreService and only works in a published game, so the AI adds it when you ask for it.

Roblox obby checkpoints settings you can change

Change any of these by asking in plain words, or open the script and edit the value yourself. Each prompt is one undo step, so you can try a value and go back.

Stage
An attribute on each pad and an IntValue in leaderstats for each player.
Forward only
By default only stage = current + 1 is accepted. Ask to allow skipping and any higher stage counts.
Respawn height
Characters appear 4 studs above the pad.
SpawnLocations
Optional: use SpawnLocation pads and set each player's RespawnLocation instead of moving the character.
Saving
Off unless you ask. When on, every DataStore call is wrapped in pcall so a failed save does not break the game.

Fixing obby checkpoints in Roblox

I respawn at the start

The respawn runs when the character is added. If your game moves characters in another script too, the two can fight. Ask the AI to find other scripts that move the character.

Stage does not go up

Only the next stage counts. If pad 3 does nothing, check that pad 2 was touched first and that the pads are numbered without gaps.

Saving does not work in Studio

DataStores need a published game and API access enabled in Game Settings. Publish the place first, then ask the AI to add saving.

Players fall through the pad

Pads must be anchored with CanCollide on. Ask the AI to check the pads in the Checkpoints folder.

More obby checkpoints ideas to try

Once the basic version works, send one of these as your next prompt. Each builds on what is already in your place.

“Turn each checkpoint green after I touch it.”

Changes the pad's color for the player who reached it. For a per-player color, the AI does it on the client.

“Add a stage counter at the top of the screen.”

Builds a small ScreenGui that reads the Stage value and updates when it changes.

“Add a Skip Stage button.”

Adds a button that raises the stage by one and respawns you. Pair it with a coin cost if you have coins.

“Put a number on top of every pad.”

Adds a SurfaceGui with the stage number to each pad in the Checkpoints folder.

Where it goes in Explorer

  • Workspace / Checkpoints (Folder) / 1, 2, 3 ... (Parts with a Stage attribute)
  • Players / each player / leaderstats / Stage (IntValue)
  • ServerScriptService / Checkpoints (Script)

Script names can differ a little; the AI names things to fit your game and tells you what it added.

Tips for a good prompt

Select the object first, or mention it with @, so the AI changes the right thing. Say what the player should see and feel, not how to script it: “the parts should fly a little and spin” works better than naming functions.

Ask for one change at a time and press Play in between. If something is off, describe what you saw, like “it only works once” or “the pieces go through the floor”. If a change goes the wrong way, press Ctrl+Z once and try different words.

Scripting it by hand vs. with AI

A checkpoint system by hand needs a leaderstats Stage value, a Touched handler that finds the player and enforces the order, a CharacterAdded handler that waits a frame and moves the character, and named pads. It is short, but easy to get subtly wrong, for example letting players go backwards or spawning inside the pad. The plugin builds and tests it with one prompt.

Before you start

You need Roblox Studio on Windows or macOS and the free Roblox AI Game Maker plugin, connected to your account with an 8 character code. New accounts get 2 credits and a free model you can use every day. A typical prompt on a cheap model costs a few hundredths of a credit, and the AI play-tests and fixes errors as part of the same build. Write in any language; the AI answers in the same one.

Obby checkpoints FAQ

Do I have to name the pads?

No. The AI creates and numbers the pads, or tags the parts you select as checkpoints in order.

Does it work with SpawnLocations?

Yes. Ask for SpawnLocation pads and the AI sets each player's RespawnLocation instead of moving them manually.

How many checkpoints can an obby have?

As many as you like. Each pad only needs a stage number, so a 10 stage obby and a 100 stage obby use the same script.
